A ministry to all the women in your church, published by Baptist Women of Ontario and Quebec

The Link & Visitor is a 24-page magazine for Christian women, published six times a year by Baptist Women of Ontario and Quebec. Probably the oldest continuing women’s magazine in Canada, it began in 1878 as a magazine about missionaries. Today its purpose is to encourage, inspire, and equip every reader to share the love and joy and hope of Christ in her home, workplace, church, neighbourhood, and world.

We are looking for Canadian writers who:

• Would like to be part of The Link & Visitor’s ministry of equipping, encouraging, and inspiring women to grow in faith and reach out in mission
• Believe the Gospel of Jesus Christ is Good News to all the women of the world
• Listen to the questions women are asking, both inside and outside the Church, and search for answers by reading widely, observing human nature, studying and meditating on Scripture, and picking the brains of other Christians
• Believe Scripture speaks to everyday issues (aging, parenting, violence, materialism, poverty, injustice, despair) but are not satisfied with proof-texts or platitudes
• Appreciate the life experiences of the older Baptist Convention of Ontario and Quebec women who form the majority of our readers, as well as those of the younger women who are our growing edge
• Consider the perspectives and sensitivities of urban, rural, and small-town women; of new and mature believers across a fairly broad theological spectrum; and of readers from many countries and cultures
• Treat readers as sisters who are learning with you, not as children who need to learn from you
• Use inclusive language when referring to people; affirm women’s gifts for witness and ministry in church, workplace, and home; and are comfortable with the NRSV or other inclusive-language Bible translations
• Are well-read but not academic, smart but not sassy, upbeat but not naive, sensitive to needs but not overwhelmed by them
• Read The Link & Visitor. (See our recent issues page to get an idea of the range of subjects we cover, but please don't send a feature on a subject we have done recently.)

You should also know:

• Each issue of the Link relates to a particular theme. Features should address one aspect of a theme, not try to cover the whole topic. Theme-related material should reach the editor eight weeks before the month of publication. A majority of features are assigned, but good freelance submissions are worked into the mix and sometimes set the theme of a future issue. Our theme list is currently not available.
• Features range from 750 to 1,800 words.
• No retellings of Bible stories, please.
• We are looking for good "Ten tips for..."-type short features.
•  We use no more than 6 poems a year and occasional fillers on seasonal themes.
• The Link accepts reprints and simultaneous submissions. The editor prefers complete manuscripts or samples of your writing, and will respond any time from immediately to a year later. Send a SSAE if a reply is expected, or a 9x12 SSAE for a free sample copy.
• Payment for features, fillers, and poems, is very modest (6–10¢ a word) and on a one-time or simultaneous rights basis. There is no payment for news items, recipes, reviews, or crafts.
• The Link will not publish your work on any web site.
• When submitting by e-mail, please DO NOT SEND TEXT AS AN ATTACHMENT. Send it as a message.

CANADIAN WRITERS ONLY, PLEASE. Unsolicited manuscripts from outside Canada will be neither considered nor returned.
