Yes these are two really big topics and women are not afraid to address them . . . because they affect every nation and every community!
The Baptist World Alliance Women's Department Conference in Hawaii focused on these through their session speakers, Bible study leaders, video clips, moving interpretive drama at each session by four women called Flash Points and then responses from a variety of perspectives.
One of our own past board members, Peggy Fonseca from Brazil, was one of those responders sharing three riveting stories of women in poverty. We heard of horrific treatment of young girls . . . the trokosi slaves in shrines in Ghana and how Baptist Women were instrumental in freeing them and now providing them with shelter, education and restoration of their dignity. Suzanna Mafford from Spain, became a city council member and found out her voice was needed once the council heard the results of a study that was done in her home town. The study indicated gender violence was on the streets and in the local night clubs of their idyllic Mediterranean community. She shared her riveting video called The Song for the Unloved. Susie is adamant that "a choice is only possible if there is an alternative" for these women freed form human trafficking.
Sisters, we need to help with having that alternative available.
The conference closed with a declaration to say we will not stop speaking up and taking action in our families, churches, communities and world. The 30 Baptist women from Canada who attended have been challenged to take a stand!
We need to talk soon!
